ABSTRACT

Social life was, of course, exclusive, and from hotels and even from certain parks, unwritten rules excluded Indians, … the Europeans in India, however long they lived there, remained strangers in the country. An unbridgable chasm existed between them and the people.… They lived in two countries, Anglo-India and India, and the two never met. The one governed the other (K.M. Panikkar, Asia and Western Dominance , 1965, pp. 116-19).
