ABSTRACT
The biological model of mental illness posits that mental illness is the result of abnormal tissue function. Since the tissue that produces mental states is primarily the central nervous system, mental illness is thought to be the result of abnormal functioning of the central nervous system. The central nervous system can be disrupted either by primary psychiatric disorders or by general medical conditions to produce problematic symptoms.
