ABSTRACT

Mood is the subjective experience of emotion that is pervasive and colors other mental functioning, including self-image and expectations about the environment. Mood is usefully conceptualized on a spectrum, from pessimistic withdrawal and self-abnegation (depression), to a general sense of well-being (euthymia), to euphoria with excessive optimism and engagement (mania). The ends of the spectrum, depression and mania, are classified as mood disorders.
