ABSTRACT
THE century from Magna Carta to the Hundred Years' War was medieval London's age of iron. These were the years in which the city's social and political structure assumed characteristic and distinctive form. For with the establishment of the commune under its mayor, the cluster of bourgeois dynasties which had emerged as the city's directive élite in the twelfth century took control of an autonomous community.
