ABSTRACT

THE VILLAGE IS THE MOST UNIVERSAL of communities and it is likely to remain so for a long time, adapting itself to urbanism as it has through its long history adapted to other influences. Hundreds of villages in a region may die, but the village remains, much as the city survives, although many cities have died. Nor is the present trend toward global urbanism likely to diminish the importance of the village in modern society. In spite of great numbers of people flocking to cities and their environs, it is better than an even guess that throughout the world more people live in villages today than ever before.
