ABSTRACT

The range of children in a school is decided by the LEA, which determines the age groups for which a school has to cater. The way children are organised within the school is the decision of the headteacher and staff, with support from the governors. Classes and groups can be formed on the basis of age, ability or stage of development or achievement in a particular activity. Children can also be grouped randomly or by friendship and family. A school may choose to have some re-grouping or setting for the older children in some areas of curriculum. The problem about this is the fact that the least able children are made aware of the fact that they are not doing as well as some of their contemporaries.
