ABSTRACT
Tibetan belongs to the Bodish branch of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages. The ethnonym is bod.pa /phøpa/ (whence Bodish). Tibetan is spoken by at least 4 million people: 2 million in Tibet, where it has joint official status with Chinese, 1 million in Nepal and India, the remainder in south-west China.
