ABSTRACT

In contrast to initial education, adult learning has tended to emphasize the learner and learning more than the teacher and teaching. Traditionally, in initial education teachers and their skills have constituted a subject for discussion, but rarely has that discussion been sought to be related to the process of learning (but see Brookfield, 2009). Adult education has tended to regard the teacher as an adjunct to learning, often necessary and frequently important but not always essential to it. However, the focus of this chapter is on the teaching process in adult and continuing education. We will first discuss types of teaching, then methods of teaching, and finally teaching aids.
