Compassion as resilience and transcendence book
True compassion often emerges from attempting to help others with those conditions that we ourselves suffer. As before, the term ``suffering'' refers speci®cally to the discontent or anguish that almost always accompanies pain, adversity, loss, error, illness and other unhappy experiences. Suffering is different from life's necessary adversities because suffering is optional. It comes from the attitude or expectation that we bring to our experience and it adds to our misery.
