ABSTRACT

After he finally decided to convert, Semon again devoted his energies to the exciting prospect of joining a research expedition. The man who finally took him on was Robert Flegel, a well known German explorer about to embark on an extensive journey through Africa to the recesses of the Benue and Niger Rivers. This was exactly what Semon had hoped for: He could learn the adventurer's art from an experienced master on a trip through exotic lands that bore all the signs of high adventure in the grand Haeckelian style.
