ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the design, selection, and control of high-performance building mechanical systems used in single- and multiple-family dwellings in which the systems are self-contained and independent of a central or community mechanical plant. The focus is on high-performance systems developed in Europe and the United States with an emphasis on energy-consuming systems that provide comfort and convenience to occupants. Organized by system type, the chapter discusses primarily space heating, space cooling, and ventilation as well as the controls and operational strategies needed to deploy and manage these systems.
