ABSTRACT
In theory, this should be an easy question to answer – it's a language. However, if you ask that question in the context of education, thinking about what is taught and learnt under that heading, the answer is a lot more complicated, largely because ‘English’ has meant something very different at different times in history, as well as varying in nature from place to place.
