ABSTRACT

Who are the lawyers? A lawyer is a very general word for a person who has studied law or who practises law. The legal profession consists of two main branches or divisions of lawyers, barristers and solicitors. In the United Kingdom, if a person has a legal problem and is in need of advice, a solicitor is approached. The role of the solicitor generally involves contact with the public – enquiring into facts and deciding whether further action is needed. If further specialist advice is needed, or if, at a later date, representation is required in the higher courts, the client is referred to a barrister.
