ABSTRACT

Sylvester, New Year, 1 January 1938, was celebrated by families with celebration wine. The children melt pieces of tin on large spoons over the gas fire, then plunge them into cold water. Bizarre shapes are formed. What do they reveal? Fortune telling was just a game. What did the future really hold? In every Jewish family thoughts turned to the question of what the new year would bring. Nothing good was expected, but nothing as bad as actually occurred.
