ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the ways in which design policies might best be organized and expressed, and briefly discusses associated techniques of presentation. Proper organization is essential not only to ensure a logical and coherent approach to the problem of design, and reasonably comprehensive coverage of the issues, but also to ensure that those who use the plan are aware of the full range of policies, and can understand when and how they will be applied. There are difficulties with relating design policy to the plan’s broad aims and objectives, and at the other end of the scale to more detailed and specific supplementary design guides, frameworks and briefs. These forms of supplementary guidance are the subject of Chapter 12.
