ABSTRACT

Given the prevalence of dementia among LTC residents, staff face many legal and ethical issues. These issues arise at a time when the resident is suffering physically and mentally, and when his relatives are likewise distressed. Consequently, both the resident and family often find it difficult to think clearly about their medical and end-of-life choices. At this point, well-informed staff members can provide invaluable information and feedback. Clear communication with residents and families can help both parties to arrive at satisfactory decisions.
