ABSTRACT

The greatest challenge facing library managers in the new millennium is, in my opinion, planning, implementing, and evaluating an ongoing viable training program for library staff. A number of important questions arise regarding this issue.

Are recent library school graduates receiving adequate instruction in library management issues to prepare them to become effective library managers?

Do working library managers have to be trained, or retrained, to lead their staffs through an extended period of inevitable change?

How must the library be properly staffed to provide the most appropriate and responsive customer service within an expanding technological environment?

What is the most effective leadership technique a library manager can rely on to encourage the staff to participate in a climate of rapid change?

Who will perform the staff training?

How and where, in an environment usually plagued with extremely limited space, will the staff receive training?
