ABSTRACT
There are two major types of second-language education in the United States: second-language education for majority-language children and second-language education for minority-language children. The first type of program is typically referred to as a foreign language program and involves the teaching of a second language to English-speaking children through a language course. The second type of program is called bilingual education and is directed at children whose home language is not English. Whereas in a foreign language program the use of the second language is restricted to that course, in a bilingual education program the second language is typically used as the language of instruction in subjects other than the language course.
