ABSTRACT
SUMMARY. Increasingly families face difficult dilemmas and decisions when elderly relatives become dependent and need the assistance of others. This article discusses the demographic and social trends which impact on the ability of families to provide the needed support and the stresses individuals can experience when providing care. Four strategies that can enhance a family's effectiveness to make decisions and their ability to provide caregiving are discussed. These are educational programs, family conferences, support groups, and respite care.
