ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of technology in enabling the creative process of music recording. In particular, issues of creative collaboration and of musical creativity and experimentation are considered in relation to the technologically laden environment of the modern recording studio. The chapter discusses how technology has fostered and enabled particular “modes” of music production and, associated with this, particular forms of collaboration (or non-collaboration). Attention is given to the musicianship and learning involved in this creativity. The chapter suggests that the technologies found in any given studio are key determinants that can at any one time allow and/or constrain creativity.
