ABSTRACT
At present there are only a few major uses for coal. The largest single use, as fuel for electric utilities, is also the only domestic one with prospects for substantial growth. The other main uses — as the basic input for coke for the steel industry and as fuel for power and process steam in a variety of industries — have grown little if at all during the postwar period. However, they have not been threatened directly by competitive fuels. 1
