ABSTRACT
In this chapter and the next, I analyze competitive patterns in the markets for Appalachian coal. Although Appalachian coal is used for a number of other purposes (including coking, steam, and residential heating), electric utility consumption has been at once the largest, fastest growing, and most sensitive to sulfur emission standards and to the price of coal relative to that of residual fuel oil.
