ABSTRACT

Badges can perform a variety of functions. While most people tend to think about badges as rewards or credentials, they can serve a number of other roles. This chapter describes how badges can be designed to serve those roles, and how they might affect the cognitive, affective, and social dimensions of user psychology. In addition to observing how badges can be used to alter social status within a community, specific badging purposes such as goal-setting, feedback, and reward are detailed. Specific considerations and examples accompany each badging purpose to help designers understand how to make badges for these purposes.
