ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the behavioral relationships between digital badges and their human collectors. It discusses behavior broadly and considers what effective behavior looks like in different circumstances. Digital badges might be used to catalyze certain types of behaviors that are effective for particular purposes, such as learning or cooperation. Thoughtful designers can use digital badges to shape behavior by motivating, providing feedback, and rewarding. The chapter lists six common behavioral categories for badges, along with examples for each, and then concludes with some recommendations for designing digital badging systems with behavior in mind.
