ABSTRACT

This chapter and the following one deal with the structure and meaning of what is by far the most complex miniature of the Stavelot Bible, the great initial 'I' of fol. 6, volume I (figs. 4-12). After describing the scenes and offering some comments on the source of the overall scheme, this chapter will turn to its main theme: the significance of the unusual scenes of viticulture on the right-hand side. The following chapter will enlarge our perspective by considering the meaning of the initial as a whole within the framework of the Christ-ocentric and typological approaches to the interpretation of Scripture.
