ABSTRACT

Grief counselling is very much about listening and not speaking. Preparing students for grief through communicating and teaching strategies does not stop grief from occurring; however, it does help a little. Grief counselling is very much about listening and not speaking. When working with the grief model there is still a large element of teaching and helping a student to develop new skills. Like the Solution-Focused Counselling Model, the teaching of skills is a role where as a counsellor we can make a big difference. Some pre-event counselling can make a large amount of difference. With grief counselling an important skill is not being scared to ask for help. Unlike the Solution-Focused Counselling Model previously described, where the objective is to help students work towards a solution, there is often no solution and only time combined with some counselling support is the way forward.
