ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the concept of moral imagination in a preschool setting. Very little is known about how teachers and their delivery of the curriculum in a classroom can affect children’s social interaction and friendships. Moral imagination is used to understand how teachers, peers and friends act through moral sensibility in moment-to-moment interactions. To better understand the role of moral imagination in friendships, this chapter explores the importance of understanding the cultural–historical context of young children’s developing friendships in the classroom and playground. We examine visual narratives in the classroom and the playground to provide different perspectives and draw on moral imagination for analysis. The findings indicate that teachers need to devote attention to their pedagogy in educational settings for the development of positive social interactions and friendships.
