ABSTRACT

To appreciate fully the meaning of the GSA's founding it is important to understand something of the context in which it occurred. Utah is home to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), also known as the Mormon Church. For the majority of Utahns, social life, politics, business, the economy, and education as well as religious life are deeply influenced by the church. Indeed, some describe Utah as a theocracy. The LDS church condemns homosexuality unequivocally (Comstock, 1996; Schow, Schow, and Raynes, 1991).
