ABSTRACT

DMX-512 is the international standard for digital communication of theatrical lights and effects. DMX is how the light board tells the lights when to turn on and how bright to be. It can also communicate with more complicated devices, such as color-changing light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and moving lights. For props controlled by DMX, most of the programming and setup is done by the lighting department. A wireless dimmer has a DMX signal transmitted from a transceiver to a small dimmer unit. The transceiver is connected to light board and the dimmer goes into prop. Radio control uses frequencies within the electromagnetic spectrum to communicate wirelessly. It requires a transmitter to send the signal and a receiver to pick it up. In the simplest systems, radio frequency (RF) transmitter consists of a single button, which sends a command to an RF receiver which acts as an on-off switch.
