ABSTRACT

Breakaway objects will deteriorate over the run of a production, so build a few that can be swapped in as needed. For added durability, thread some lamp rod into the holes and insert dowels into them. This gives a metal edge to break the dowels against, which makes it easy to break and prevents the hole from widening over time. One of the trickier tasks is making a stool, chair, or bench that needs to be sat upon before it breaks. A seat that is sturdy enough to support a human body is usually too sturdy to be broken by an actor. As with furniture, many items can be broken ahead of time, and then held together temporarily. Cut the prop in pieces so the break lines are not too visible; if the piece has carved details or seams, these are good places to cut.
