ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a module that discusses the importance of the student–teacher relationship to a student’s success and provides strategies to encourage positive relationships through different activities. It provides a case study, the relevant research, an overview of the model, a series of activities and the final thoughts. The module aims to assist teachers and clinicians working with adolescents to build positive student-teacher relationships within their school. Although a teacher’s primary role may be to teach certain material, their role extends far beyond providing opportunities for academic success. Governments and schools can place tremendous pressure on teachers through performance monitoring and grade-based priorities to increase the academic outcomes of students. Schools can spend a significant amount of time investing in professional development, and policies that aim to increase grades for students. Parents are often convinced that their son or daughter is a top student and needs to get into the best university.
