ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at units of work, written by teachers for their own use, as a planning tool to help secure progression in learning. Longer-term planning is a huge remit. When planning longer-term in modern languages (ML), for example, of building in opportunities to recycle previously learnt vocabulary and structures and opportunities to deepen understanding of grammatical concepts that have already been introduced. Time spent evaluating longer-term planning is time well spent. In a sense, evaluation of longer-term planning is part of the same planning cycle that teachers will be familiar with from lesson planning. Systematic reflection and evaluation will help develop their understanding of progression in learning across lessons; this in turn will benefit their subsequent lesson planning and longer-term planning. Developing a longer-term perspective on teaching and learning in ML goes hand-in-hand with planning for a balance of language learning experience.
