ABSTRACT
In chapter 1 the major subprocesses of language understanding were identified. The first of these to be examined in detail is the recognition of individual words. The problem of identifying words arises only in comprehension, and not in production. The corresponding problem in production is the selection of lexical items to express particular meanings. There has been comparatively little work on this topic. Some of it will be mentioned briefly in chapter 9.
