ABSTRACT
The last two chapters have discussed how people recognize words and how they group those words into phrases and sentences. However, neither word recognition nor the computation of syntactic structure is the final goal of the language understanding system. Its goal, as was emphasized in chapter 1, is to construct a mental representation of the information that is conveyed by a sequence of sentences. It has to work out the meaning, in a rather general sense, of what is seen or heard.
