ABSTRACT
The previous chapter introduced the concept of meaning, but included comparatively little discussion of the meaning of words. Psycholinguists do study word meaning, about which they ask two principal questions. (1) How is knowledge about word meanings stored in the mind? (2) How are meanings brought out of storage in the course of understanding or producing discourse? The first question is a question about representations, the second a question about processes.
