ABSTRACT

This chapter will first introduce the key characteristics of what might be called the 'worldview' of military research and development; it will then address the underlying conception of human beings within this framework. The first section of the chapter will describe the worldview. Succeeding sections will address various aspects of this research framework dealing with the role of human beings within military systems. The areas to be discussed are engineering psychology, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, and military training research. The final section will describe research in computer-based education, in terms of this framework, as a way of introduction into the historical material of Part II.
