ABSTRACT

During the 1950s, over half of IBM's electronic data processing revenues came from contracts with the US Air Force (Fisher et al., 1983, p. 30). A B-52 program undertaken during the Korean War was responsible for a portion of these funds; however, the bulk of military funding was for IBM research and development in the SAGE system. In fact, SAGE represented IBM's largest undertaking through the mid-1950s (p. 28), with 7,000 to 8,000 IBM employees working on SAGE at the peak of its involvement.
