ABSTRACT
Elia Barcelo is a recognized and successful writer, who has published across a wide spectrum, including journalism and novels for young adults, although she is best known for her work in genres that go beyond realism, such as science fiction, fantasy, and stories that utilize or suggest the supernatural one way or another. She is a proficient linguist and has pursued an academic career teaching Hispanic literature in Austria. Barcelo selects and deploys to potent effect several staples of classic vampire fiction, creating a parodic caricature of the seductive female vampire. The mention of staking and decapitation, for example, keeps afloat the characterization of the protagonist as a supernatural vampire as well as – rather than merely as an image for – a femme fatale. This much is also true of Senorita Vampiro, with her sequence of interchangeable cadaverous men.
