ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides beginning teachers and those new to teaching literature with a structured guide to approaching the aspect of the syllabus to help students to achieve examination success. It offers practical suggestions for classroom and independent activities which can be adapted for a variety of texts and languages. The book looks at the preliminary or pre-teaching activities which can be used as an introduction to literature with a class. It considers the challenges associated with studying a novel and offers strategies to support students’ reading competence, balancing independent and whole-class tasks. The book focuses on areas of characterisation, theme, structure and style with reference to the types of question which may be expected in the final examination. It explores ideas for using literature earlier in the school curriculum and suggests suitable texts in French, Spanish and German.
