ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 examines economic and ideational aspects of the US‒Japan alliance and links it to regionalism in the Asia-Pacific, arguing that the scope of regionalism is being altered due to the US presence. In the neo-Gramscian sense, the consent of the individual states is seen as a necessary requirement to sustain hegemony, so it is important to take the perspectives of other Asian states into consideration if we are to truly understand the historic bloc and the role of the US‒Japan alliance within it.
