ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the ecomediasphere, a holistic method of ecomedia analysis that explores the ecomedia’s footprint and mindprint. It reviews the theory of spherical design and conceptual approach for analyzing ecomedia, followed by an overview of two broad ecomedia ecologies: world system and Earth system. Drawing on the world-ecology analytical framework, world system is the realm of ideas and information and Earth system is the materiality of the global economic system and its ecological impacts. This includes an overview of this system’s neoliberal political ecology, including a discussion of finance and externalization and their impacts on media and the environment. It closes with the assertion that ecomedia literacy should include the analysis of both “ideas” and “things.”
