ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 pushes discussions further towards the role of audiences while, as with Chapters 3 and 4, beginning to explore how world-building is shaped by uses and affordances of distinct digital platforms. This chapter identifies the world-building strategies that have been employed in augmenting the televisual experience of The Walking Dead, focusing on Internet content including a webisode series, an accompanying talk show, and an app feature. In doing so, I demonstrate how these particular forms of what I call ‘augmented television’ draw on sociological and anthropological notions of communication, modern social life, and environment in ways that present rich opportunities for sociological world-building.
