ABSTRACT

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) emphasize that research is so important it should be embedded throughout every discipline, reminding us that research is a personalized, ongoing lifestyle, not just an educational experience. Within the CCSS, teachers will find standards that point to short- and long-term research projects in all areas of study, focusing on reading, assessing, analyzing, and synthesizing material, piggybacking on the previously published positions of all national major literary professional organizations. The Next Generation Science Standards, the C3 Framework for Social Studies Standards, and the American Association of School Library's 21st Century Standards also delineate the importance of research integration in our curricula as well. When research plays an integral role in our students' lives, they can explain why we do things and argue how we can be better. Teaching research well is teaching thinking. Telling students to 'go research' is the same as telling us to 'teach research'.
