ABSTRACT

Unconscious plagiarism occurs when the students do not monitor their sources closely and they are often too impatient to train themselves to be thorough monitors. They want to write down what they see and move on. But if teachers help students take careful notes, they help them avoid this unconscious plagiarism. When looking at how philosophers impact the US Constitution, students will take notes about the philosophers' parents' names. When looking at how Shakespeare impacted the English language, they will include information about where he was born. It is important to show students a variety of different methods of note-taking strategies and let them determine which techniques will best help them access and remember the information. Students who take notes this way rewrite them when organizing them, but the process of being able to spread it out onto one sheet of paper helps them see the larger picture.
