ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the education, operational career, and background of the author as well as the origination and evolution of the commercial nuclear industry’s approach to Human and Organizational Performance (H&OP). As an operator rather than an academic, who may have limited operational or managerial experience, the author makes a case for a more rigorous approach to industrial operations based not only on the technical rigors associated with operating a nuclear submarine but also on a practical application of a “new view” of performance based on systems thinking, high reliability, and resilience engineering principles.
