ABSTRACT

The four years of the war provided in themselves ample material for a separate volume on the history of the mining industry. It was a hectic and troublous period, so packed with incident as to make it one of the most interesting and most important in the history of coal mining. I am mainly concerned, however, with the years 1918-1936, and must, therefore, pass over it lightly, asking my readers to regard this brief chapter as one intended merely to link up the pre-war with the post-war period.
