ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the conceptual lenses that are used to scrutinise the strength and conditioning profession and strength and conditioning practices. The authors present their interpretations of critical thinking and its value to strength and conditioning. The understandings that can occur through praxis are described, and the distinction between reflection and reflexivity are debated. The importance of accurate problem setting is emphasised along with some guidance on how to effectively name and frame any professional challenges that are encountered. A case is made for strength and conditioning work being situated and relational, reinforcing the need for strength and conditioning coaches to be professionally adaptable. The value of developing and maintaining professional support groups is described as having multiple personal and professional benefits. A range of ethical frameworks for practice are presented by reviewing and critiquing normative ethics. The chapter concludes by discussing cultural competence as an important element of the professional competence framework.
