ABSTRACT

Much has been written about how the production and transportation of North Slope oil will necessitate invading areas previously undisturbed by man and his technology. Emphasis has been given to the dangers of oil spills and leaks and the possible peril to Arctic flora and fauna. But the environmental issues in the Alaskan oil controversy are both highly complex and often poorly defined. Indeed, some of the issues defy description because of man’s limited understanding of precisely what is at stake.
