ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 examines attachment as a core integrative concept, through the integration of CBT, person-centred, relational and hypnotherapeutic modalities. Healthy and unhealthy attachment is considered and exercises are provided that can be used when working with clients. These exercises can also be used by mental health practitioners, for them to consider their own healthy and unhealthy attachments. This chapter also looks at non-attachment and considers its links to meditation, mindfulness and to Buddhist principles, given the popularity of these Eastern-based approaches to mental health and wellbeing. Chapter 3 also explores how clients can strive to maintain and enrich the healthy attachments that they may have, as anchors for their lives. This is particularly important given the socio-political challenges of the current era for human existence. The chapter also features some case studies of how working with attachment can involve the integration of CBT, person-centred, relational and hypnotherapeutic modalities.
