ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the philosophies and spatialities of character education in England. It begins by charting the emergence of a renewed character agenda in recent years, critically analysing contemporary policies and frameworks for character education. These reveal wider constructions of childhood and youth, operating at different spatial scales. The chapter goes on to place the rise (or return) of character education in England in the wider context of educational reforms in the United Kingdom and a landscape of devolution. It ends by critically examining the place of military ethos providers as part of attempts to foster a ‘character nation’. The Conservative Party have introduced several educational policies and reforms in the last decade. They returned to power as part of a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats led by David Cameron as Prime Minister.
